This is definitely the way to go even if the target is quite challenging. An ambitious regulatory framework is the right policy to apply in sustainable transport.
“New regulations apply to freight vehicles weighing 3.8 tons or more. Gradually, the share of environmentally friendly cars in the total sales of such trucks should increase, so that by 2045 all-new trucks sold in California should have zero emissions”
This type of regulations sets up the right path for the rest of stakeholders (Auto OEMs, consumers, infra owners, etc) to adapt and evolve. Today the technology exist at the level of the vehicles and the electric charging infrastructure.
“In addition, the requirements specified that by 2035 all vehicles operating at short distances in ports and at railway stations should switch to electric traction, and by 2040, electric delivery vans should cover the “last mile” of delivery.”
Lets not forget that regulation is only part of the solution. Support to Auto manufacturers, supply chains and public/private charging infrastructure is also needed to be able to comply in time with the new targets.
Also affordable financing for corporates and consumers will facilitate the shift to electric mobility… similar schemes will be needed for hydrogen transport knowing that is a less developed technology… in any case these are very good news that should be replicated in Europe and other countries in the world.
